Those that know me know I am big into comic books. Those that don't know me won't be reading this anyway...so why the preface? Who cares...on with the blog:

Some may be aware of the Watchmen movie coming to theaters next March. Some may not know who or what the watchmen are. Though I am a big fan of "Sequential Art" (what some geeks call comics) I had never read the Alan Moore scribed, Hugo Award-winning graphic novel THE WATCHMEN. THE WATCHMEN is the only comic to be given the Hugo award and was listed by the New York Times as so good it will make you (beep!). Ok, I made that up, but the book has earned a lot of praise.

Since the movie is coming out next year, I thought I would see what all the fuss was about. Luckily my good friend Ken had a copy just sitting around his living room. I borrowed, and though I am not finished with it yet I must say this:

oh
my
effing
geeeeyawd

This is the best comic book I have ever read. It beats out everything. It's better than Dark Knight, Sin City and every other "Genre Bending" comic out there. Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" is close in it's greatness, but Watchmen is amazing. I am not going to explain it too much. If you are expecting a super hero type romp with super powers and such this is not the book for you. Yes there are super heroes, and yes there is the occasional fight scene here and there, but this is not the book you are looking for if "Wham" and "Blammo" are words you want in your comics. The graphic novel was a 12 part series originally. There is an entire issue of the comic series about two 40+ year old retired super heroes falling in love (lust) and not once did I get bored, want action, or feel it was cheezy, ham handed or trite. This is a story that assumes these super heroes really exist. It gets into their minds and tries to explain why someone would dress up in tights and jump from tall buildings. It does so much more than that!

If you are at all interested in the genre, you must read this book.

rant off.
